Lesser spotted tree climbing spaniel
Felled by the Great Storm
Clothed in verdant velvet moss -
The tree still has life.
An ancient avenue of Lime trees were layed low by the storms of 1987. Since then they have laid like a row of giant dominoes pushed over by a mighty hand. Whether it was lack of funds or great foresight, the trees were never removed and have since generated new life:
Branches have grown vertically from the old trunk creating new "trees", whose branches are easily reached by deer. The upturned rootballs provide perchs for birds and easy homes for rabbits. The old trunks now host beautiful mosses and fungi. Children and dogs (well this one anyway), see them as natures climbing frames and run happily along their length and climb over their branches.
The storm irrevocably changed the landscape around here, but a new landscape has grown up from the destruction.
There must be a moral in there somewhere, but I am too tired to work it out .... need to go and wrap presents now to try and reach my goal of having everything wrapped before Christmas eve night. I have never yet acheived this but am feeling hopeful this year.
Back later (covered in sellotape) to catch up.
