Bastard balm
Four years ago I was trusted with the secret location of the only Bastard balm Melittis melissophyllum plant in west Sussex by an elderly plants person I met at HNHS.
Since then I have monitored the plant year on year for him. The first year when I finally found it I realized I had visited too late to see the flowers, with the single flower already over. The following year the plant was difficult to find as it was in the middle of a lot of vigorous vegetation, it was very spindly and struggling to survive, and we feared the worst. During the winter that followed the vegetation got cut back and the plant once again had light and last year it was much more vigorous, making substantial growth, but still without flowers. This year it is spectacular with several stems each with flowers and I am ecstatic!
So here is your fist view of my most loved plant... there will be more!
According to 'Plantlife' it is only found in South West England, the New Forest and South west Wales where it's status is vulnerable and near threatened.
Needless to say the secret is safe with me.
