Deaf can Dance
I am just back from an extraordinary evening at the Macrobert arts centre where two young deaf Romanians dancers gave a powerful performance of two works in development, 9/11 and Heartsore.
Petre Dobre became deaf as a child. He developed a love of dance as a teenager and came to study at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland on Glasgow where he graduated in Performance.
Irina Vartopeanu is a first year student at the Conservatoire.
The message they want to get across is: Deaf can Dance.
And tonight was a celebration of that. More than half the audience were deaf and their sheer exuberance and joy at witnessing a dance performance created and performed by two deaf people was a joy to behold.
Director Julie Ellen said they had brought a new energy to the theatre and a new way of storytelling.
