Plum pest

My nursery took a couple of our school Variety Club minibuses to the nearby lake beach today. The kids enjoyed digging in sand, climbing on play equipment, splashing in water, and whizzing down a giant slide. The sun beat down mercilessly, but we had drinks and sun cream and a place to paddle.

Afterwards I popped in to see my friend Gail, and enjoy a cup of tea. Her plum tree has a problem: a type of beetle lays eggs in it. After a while a hard droplet forms on the outside of the fruit. If you then place the fruit in water, a worm comes out. I took a photo of the beetle (but it's a poor shot) and one of the droplet. I think she should ask Gardeners Question Time for advice, as she doesn't want to spray the tree with toxic chemicals, but it's heavily infested. She has also given me some green plums to attempt to ripen on a South-facing windowsill, to see if they'll be ok because they don't look infested yet. Her flat is in a basement and faces North.

So this is today's less than perfect plum shot, because phones are not allowed at nursery on when we're with the children. Tomorrow we have the leavers' party. Should be fun...
