“Billy Penn”
That’s how the locals refer to the statue of William Penn atop Philadelphia’s City Hall. William Penn -granted property in the new land by the King -so named his gift “Pennsylvania”. William also did a fantastic job of laying the city onto a square grid; numbered streets running North to South, and named streets moving East to West. City Hall sits directly in the center at Market & Broad Streets. You literally must drive counter-clockwise around the building to traverse town. FYI, the streets north of City Hall above Market St, are standard names (Arch, Vine, Callowhill). South of Market St & City Hall, the E-W streets are all named for trees; Walnut, Chestnut, Locust, Pine, Spruce, until you hit South Street . . . . “Where do all the hippies meet? South St, South St!” . . . Yes, THAT South Street !
I invite you to come & visit Philly, Congress Hall, the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall and Betsy Ross house, not to mention many other of our Nations firsts!
