Once more into the night

Apartment living is generally very good from the canine perspective.

Front and back balconies are ideal for keeping an eye on external threats from the street. Ditto for keeping an eye on the cat in unit three!

Signals from dogs in distress can be picked up from anywhere in the area. Convincing the Silverback that we should go and lend a hand is not always easy however. I don’t think he gets pack mentality (all for one and one for all etc.)

The one area that requires getting the humans organised is toilet breaks. I like to tend to such matters in the park over the road. This has the added bonus of staking territorial claims. Unfortunately the park is also the main access to the dog beach so a lot of interlopers come through. Overwriting their scents is a full time job!

Luckily the Sparrow likes to walk around the block first thing in the morning which is handy. Then there’s opportunities on the way to the car or when the surf needs to be checked from the lookout. But, the best one of all is the late night, quick lap of the park with the Silverback. Occasionally we catch the cat lurking and see it off, but mostly it’s about making sure the last of the foreign scents are overwritten so we can all sleep easy!

Then it’s back up the stairs, liver treat and bed. I sleep with one eye open of course, security is my other full time job.

‘Without jobs, a working dog is just a dog’
