We breathed deeply and concentrated.

Piers were in existence at St. Andrews harbour by 1600 or thereby. According to records The North Pier, or Long Pier, is circa 268m long - this includes the final concrete section built in 1900, which in the photo. The pier at the shore end is 6.4m wide, with a slightly elevated, 3m wide, north side walkway. At the concrete far end of the pier the walkway is about a metre wide .... and much higher. The drop to the sea is notable - fortunately it was a windless afternoon today when my wife and I walked tentatively towards the signal light at the end, and the ladder down to safety.
