Camden Lock Markets
When a man is tired of London...he's tired of life...for there is in London, all life can afford. Samuel Johnson
Who can ever tire of London with all its amazing facets, knooks and crannies enticing the unwary but inquisitive visitor at every turn!!
Today GK and I spent our last day tramping the streets and enjoying the atmosphere of a city that has charmed the hearts of many more than just we two! Despite the mizzle...a combination of mist and drizzle....we enjoyed an entertaining train ride on the South East Network from Hayes station to London Bridge where we joined the throng of shoppers heading for the January sales intent on bagging a bargain. The train ride was all we had in common! They went left....we went right!!
For us....our last trip to the great metrepolis and we were intent on doing something far more radical.....exploring an area neither of us had been to before...Camden Town and Lock!
I'd read about it in a DK guide book and being art and crafty with a touch of flea markety interest thrown in....was very keen to explore! GK gallantly tagged along!
Never trust a modern day guide book locked into the 20th century! No mention at all of the wonderful story of the barge horses and their very own hospital! The Stables market is an absolute must if you are 'up town' at any time....a rabbit warren of veritable Victorian tradition and history steeped in the brickwork and cobblestones with 'larger than life' bronze statues depicting all aspects of the farrier business that went on in those underground tunnels.
Like our very own global village every nation on earth finds a representative there in amidst the myriads of stalls and barrows, cabins and alleyways and even the mizzle could not deter the enthusiasm of the food vendors vying for every passer by! Hot cinnamon apple juice, mulled wine, steaming hot chocolate and wondrous recipes from all corners of the globe!!!
I repeat....If a man is tired of London....he's tired of life!
If you've never ever been to Camden Lock....make sure its a diary date on your calendar in 2013....an experience which should definitely not be missed.
Happy Blipping Everyone
