Melk Abbey

Melk is in the Wachau Valley region in Austria and the Abbey has a 900 year history and built in the baroque style.

It stands high on a hillside with an impressive presence. The monastery has 30 monks who are active in the parishes and in the school which is on the site. There are 900 pupils aged 10-18 years at the school.

Our guide round the Abbey was an 18 year old girl who was at the school until June. She was so knowledgeable, with excellent English and did a brilliant job.

We weren’t allowed to take pictures in the Abbey, but could take on on the stairwell into one part of the building. (In extras)

In the gardens there was the Pavilion, a very large building, which was decorated inside with ‘Enigmatic Imageries’. I took loads of pictures and have had difficulties in choosing one picture. (In extras)

We visited the Abbey several years ago, 24th December 2011 and attended the carol service in the evening. It was a wonderful and moving experience with the students and their families. I have a picture in blip of the ceiling of the Abbey, but cannot link it at present on my iPad.

During the afternoon we sailed down to Dürnstein and walked into the small village. Their specialty is white wine and growing apricots. We tried out the drunken apricots, takes your breath away!!!!

WiFi is very variable and some times I need two or three goes at uploading my blip. I have been checking out your blips, but commenting is difficult. I will catch up in time.
