A Hole in the Sky
This is the beautiful oak tree in the front garden of my friend and neighbor, Cindy. It is truly magnificent. We were out walking Ozzie early this morning. It was already 80º outside and I was trying to catch the rays of sun shining through the branches but I think I just highlighted the wires running through them.
I have already become aware of the incredible maze of wires and cables strung above our streets because of the fire danger inherent in the electrical ones. In addition the the electrical wires, each cable company puts up its own set of wires on the same poles. We have some pretty unsightly looking wires up there that I never used to notice.
We learned yesterday in our class that one main reason for the push for 5G wireless is to run a system of autonomous vehicles
which will be equipped with so much technology (lidar, sensors, computers, etc) that they won't be able to run without a faster system.
We also learned about the propensity of the Silicon Valley tech companies to bash on with the tech aspects without considering the ethical complications. And there are plenty of those between inventing a car that can run without a driver and a car that can make decisions.
Setting up a 5G network is not just a matter of stringing up another cable. It will be a whole new system. Wireless systems require a lot of wires and towers and poles....and somebody who can think..,.
