Diary of an Edinburgher

Afternoon tea treat

I watched the England game at 9am. But I did not bother to get dressed. I was still in my dressing gown when Kerri and Luke arrived at 10.30 to take Archie out. But I was dressed when they brought him back about midday. They're off on holiday to Costa Rica next week. That's three lots of Archie's walkers who have gone there recently.

Elizabeth then took him out, but by this time the rain had set in for the day, so they didn’t go right through the Hermitage as usual, but had a walk in the nearby woods (Extra by Elizabeth) then hung out at home for a while.

We took the bus around the a local church hall for an afternoon tea event. Our pal Mary, who goes to the gym, invited us. Her niece puts it on every year in aid of a charity, today it was Dementia awareness. JR made a cake, but actually, it wasn’t needed. There was SO much stuff! Dozens of tables, all set up beautifully with embroidered tablecloths, fresh flowers, fine china teacups, saucers, and linen napkins, all with two cake stands laden with sandwiches, cakes, scones - you name it. And people kept coming round with more. It was most impressive.

Unfortunately, we were late and had to sit right next to the band (two chaps with guitars and microphones). They really were not needed, as everyone was gabbling anyway. And it made conversing with our neighbours very difficult. I thought they could have left 'Stayin' Alive' off their playlist to a couple of hundred octogenarians. Mind you, 'Ye cannae get yer granny aff the drugs' (sung to the tune of that well known Scottish kids' song 'Ye cannae shove yer granny aff a bus') was quite amusing, but I may have been the only person actually listening to it. We've already booked ourselves in for next year's event.

I also watched the Japan/Samoa game. A good game - too many of the games so far have been one-sided. But it'll be getting more interesting from now on. And hopes of Scotland getting to the quarter finals took a dent with Japan's win and bonus point today. They'll be Very Hard to beat.
