Common Enchantments

Colonial Dorchester

I traveled down to Summerville today to meet up with my friends Nell and Joyce whom I met on the bus excursion to Canada three years ago.  We have stayed in contact even though the bus trip was the first time we met.  We had a good day of chatting and catching up, then went to Colonial Dorchester Historic Site for a walk before having a late lunch.

Dorchester was a town built along the Ashley River 15 miles above Charleston and  was a thriving business area for farmers  before the start of the Revoluntionary War in the mid 1700s.   A fort was built to house ammunition and black powder away from Charleston in this area.   The photo above is the bell tower of St. George's Church built in 1751.    During the war the British occupied this area and after the war the town was abandoned as the people had moved away toward the town of Summerville.     The forest grew over this area and there has been many archeological excavations done once it was discovered.   We had a good chuckle as one of the old tombstones was inscribed with the name of the lady but said she was "an amiable consort " of Mr. Hutchinson.     So that is the history lesson for today!

It was a good day with really wonderful weather and company!     I hate that they live two hours from me!
