Billy the Seal

This statue is in Victoria Park in the Canton district of Cardiff', in memory of an animal famous in Canton folklore.
After being accidentally caught by a trawler which docked at Cardiff in 1912, Billy became a great attraction at a pool in Victoria Park, where he entertained children and adults for many years.
In 1927, during severe local flooding, Billy left his usual home and was spotted swimming along a nearby main road towards the city centre. Fortunately he was re-caught and returned to the park, but not before - according to local legend - he had boarded a tram.

The odd thing is, when Billy finally died in 1939, he was found to be a she!
