First Full Day - Monday

What a day of iconic sights! We started the day right at the southern tip of Manhattan to catch the ferry to see the Statue of Liberty. It was a beautiful, warm day and Lady Liberty was looking good. There is a small museum nearby that gives a good account of the idea behind the statue and the work to make it.

We then took the ferry to a Ellis Island, the famous place many Americans first stepped foot into the country...or not quite. It was a major immigration entry point from about 1892 to 1954. I have a feeling one of my grandfathers came into America via Ellis Island, stayed for a few years and then went to Russia before the revolution, but I haven’t found a way to verify that. I need the team from Who Do You Think You Are to lend a hand!

When we got back to Manhattan, we walked up to where the Twin Towers used to be. The last time I was there was two years after the disaster and the area was very much still a demolition site. Now it is a fitting, moving memorial for the many souls who lost their lives.
