The Night the Animals Talk

Dear Diary,

It is an old legend that the animals get the gift of speech at midnight on Christmas Eve.  I grew up in the country but we didn't have a donkey, an ox or lambs.  We had chickens.  Somehow, I doubted they were present in the manger so I was pretty sure they wouldn't be talking although I never stayed up in the chicken coop to verify that.  There was a bit of catch to this anyway as Santa wouldn't come to your house if you were awake and one never knew what time that would be.  What's a child to do?  I wasn't taking any chances, I went to bed!  I hope Santa is really good to you tonight!  ps. If anyone can verify the chicken thing I would be happy to know!
