Handerkrafts
Many years ago, I read an interview with (or maybe an essay by) Brian Eno in which he was discussing the Turner prize. The bit that stuck with me was his point that it was simply bonkers to have one prize that covered all the different art forms and genres.
It's an argument that extends into every day life, I think. For example, if you asked me what my favourite film is, I would probably fall back on 'The Godfather' but, really, I have about twenty, all of which fall into different categories. I'm not going to fret about what those categories might be but those films would include: 'High Fidelity'; 'Frost/Nixon'; 'American Beauty'; A Fish Called Wanda'; 'Black Panther'; 'The Unforgiven'; 'Schindler's List'; 'The January Man'; 'Shaun Of The Dead'; 'Stop Making Sense'; and most of the Harry Potter films.
And so to favourite Christmas presents. The genre I'm going to pick here is something like 'most imaginative and handmade', and the winner is these handkerchiefs that the Minx embroidered for me. If you know your Kraftwerk, you'll recognise these symbols that are associated with some of their most well-known albums.
It's hard to pick the one I like best; the top one is the most amazing as it captures what is already quite a tricky graphic but I'm going to go for the one at the bottom, which is the modern logo for 'Trans Europa Express'.
