Cheesy mash
People who are good cooks can definitely do two things better than me: firstly, time all the things they're cooking to be ready at the same time and, secondly, improvise with ingredients. This evening, a failure in the first department led to an experiment in the second.
I was making mash, (veggie) sausages, and beans for Dan and Abi's tea but I mistimed this to such an extraordinary extent that the mash was ready just as the sausages commenced their twenty minute bask in the oven.
I thought about putting the mash in the oven, too, to keep it warm but I was worried that it might dry out. In a moment of inspiration, I decided to put a layer of grated cheddar on the top. I can't begin to tell you how pleased I was with myself for having this inspired culinary idea! A few minutes later, it was all done.
Thus, Dan and Abi were subsequently served their sausages, beans, and - surprise! - cheesy mash. The cheese has melted and browned perfectly. I was pretty chuffed with myself, to be honest.
Sadly, it has to be said that the kids were less impressed. It wasn't so much that they didn't eat it but when I asked the $64 question - "Shall I do the mash like this again next time?" - I was greeted with "Well, you can if you want'. Which I guess is kind and gentle.
Anyway, that aside, it was a good day. A longish run with no tendon issues and I got the radio show done. Music room remains untidied.
