Sunday: Northern Lights

Our guide, Carlos, picked us up late morning for a city tour of Yellowknife.  I have to say it was pretty bizarre.  He drove us all round suburbia, and told us how much each house cost, as well as showing us all the houses he had owned and sold over the years.  Having been here before, K. and I know that there is a bit more to town so we’ll branch out independently tomorrow.

It didn’t matter as the day was fabulous anyway.  We went dog mushing which was fantastic (see extras).  Also got to drive on the ice road - it’s only open three months of the year when the ice is thick enough to form a highway - it’s currently about five feet thick and links Yellowknife with the northern parts of the Northwest Territories (road and ice in extras).

And we headed back out to the cabin again for some more light watching.  They were really spectacular tonight.  We were due to go on snowmobiles but the temperature, with windchill, was -51C, so we opted for the bus instead.

And to prove that there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing, here is my daily outfit:

Underwear
2 long sleeved thermal t-shirts
1 short-sleeved thermal shirt
2 pairs thermal long johns
1 thick wool jumper
1 pair fleece lined trousers
3 pairs socks (2 woollen)
1 windcheater
1 pair ski trousers
1 heavy jacket
1 neckerchief
1 scarf
1 pair inner gloves
1 pair thermal gloves
1 set hand warmers
1 balaclava
1 thermal hat
1 outer balaclava
1 pair snow boots

Unsurprisingly, it takes for ever to get ready...........
