Underley Hall
A little over twenty-eight years ago, my first wife and I, along with our eldest daughter, Charlie, moved into Underley Home Farmhouse, on the Underley Estate, about a mile north of Kirkby Lonsdale.
At some point while we were living there I found an old book about the area in a second hand shop and there were a couple of pages describing a visit to Underley Hall. I remember that it involved taking a horse and carriage from Kirkby Lonsdale railway station, which is some way to the east of the town along what is now the A65.
The book was lost, mislaid, or lent years ago but I seem to remember that their journey took them via the town and through the old gates situated on the Oxenholme Road that goes north out of Kirkby Lonsdale. That entrance to the estate still exists - it has a couple of fine pillars where the gates would have been - but you can't get down onto the estate that way anymore.
Dan and I walked past the gates on today's walk and I took this photo of Underley Hall over the wall that borders the estate. The estate also has its own bridge over the Lune which opens up some nice running routes across to the other side of the river and I made good use of it when we lived in the farmhouse. (Unfortunately it's not open to the public so I had to stop doing that when we moved to Barbon in 1997.)
