"Who moved my sofa?"

Growing up in New Malden in the late sixties and early seventies, I can't think of a house I visited that didn't have a downstairs that consisted of a front/living room (sometimes referred to as "the lounge") overlooking a front garden and street, and a dining room at the back. The location of the kitchen and access to that seem to have been the only variables.

In Hong Kong it was different, not least because most people lived in flats. We lived in one of the few houses on the island and that was laid out so that the living room overlooked the valley, which meant the situation was reversed: first kitchen, then dining room (including a glass walled indoor garden that was open to the elements from above), and finally the living room and balcony.

I've never thought about it until writing this right now but I repeated that when I moved into my house in Kirkby Lonsdale. The dining room is at the front looking out onto the street and the living room is at the back, overlooking the Lune valley. Or at least it was until this week!

The Minx had posited a seasonal move around, so that the living room was at the front of the house during the summer, where it would catch the evening sun. We'd switch it back in the winter for the open fire. And then, on Tuesday while Dan and I were out walking, she went ahead and did it. Single-handedly!

It has been a great success except with the cats, who have been highly dubious about the whole enterprise. Flea kept coming to the French windows on Wednesday and then declining to enter. She seems to have accepted it today, though, maybe because she's discovered how the sun falls on the sofa in the late afternoon!
