Dungeness
Lockdown Day 62
We went on another road trip in Bertie today, still staying relatively local but it was the furthest we've been since lockdown began. We drove to Dungeness which is very apocalyptic at the best of times, but today it was more strange than normal as the road to the estate was closed and it was like a ghost town, we only saw one other person walking through the estate.
We parked up a short distance away at the beach and had a very blustery walk along the beach before walking up to the road through the estate looking at the shacks, and down to the lighthouse. Then we walked back along the beach looking at the fishing boats, many of which are completely abandoned and left to rot. I think Dungeness is like Marmite, you either love it or hate it, and for me, I love it - it's like the land the time forgot and hard to believe it's in the UK, there's nowhere else like it. You kind of expect tumbleweed to go blowing down the road.
When we got back to Bertie, we slid open the door and Alan made a cup of coffee on the little kitchen and our new 'fridge' arrived the other day so lunch was kept fresh in there, and we sat looking out onto the beach sheltered from the wind, listening to music (I played Ghost Town by the Specials). It was really lovely, and I'm so glad Alan had the idea to do this conversion - the timing was particularly good due to the current pandemic as it means we can still go out for lunch and be socially distanced from anyone.
We drove through rain on the way home so we timed it well, stopped off at Pets at Home to pick up some more food for the boys and then I cooked Fajitas for dinner. We were both really tired, which I think was due to walking 4 miles in winds of about 27 mph, but it's been a really lovely day.
