Diary of an Edinburgher

By LadyMarchmont

It’s open again!!

Archie’s favourite day - Elizabeth took him out. (20,000 -odd steps). And what a nice day it was too.

JR did something she hasn’t done for months - she went to Waitrose supermarket. She has missed this so much. She went at 8am - the oldie’s slot. But ‘oldies’ are not allowed to buy wine - it’s closed till 10 o’clock...

There are two things I’m tempted out on a walk for. Well, three - but pub lunches have been off the list for many months now. So, a decent coffee (and pastry) or an epic (ie large) ice cream. And Mary’s Milk Bar is open again!

So we set off across the Meadows. We actually met up with our ex-neighbours on the way, and had a good catch up with them. They’ve had quite a difficult lockdown, not only both ‘working from home’ with a five year old energetic boy, but a frightening medical emergency, and the neighbours downstairs continuing with major renovations, which caused a crack up their wall and into the flat above!!

There was quite a queue at the ice cream parlour, but well worth it. I had my usual (triple) vanilla, but JR is more adventurous and had roasted fig and salted caramel, which she declared to be her new favourite.

We walked home (6,736 steps) through the Meadows again, and it was mobbed! Groups walking there with humungous pizza boxes, which is MUCH better than burning the grass with barbecues.

Rufus and his mum popped up for a visit to the sunny back garden, and Elizabeth arrived later. Our neighbour from upstairs joined us with a bottle of rosé, and the wee girls came out briefly. Most pleasant.
