Cuts Like a Knife

Well, hopefully it will once I’ve finished with it. This knife used to belong to Mrs C’s grandmother and is probably nearly a hundred years old. Our favourite theory is that it might have started life as part of a smart canteen of cutlery, possibly received as a wedding present. Over the years, other parts of the canteen might have disappeared and this knife was relegated to potato peeling duty, or cutting fresh veg from the garden - this is certainly how Mrs C remembers it from her childhood. Over the years, constant sharpening has worn the blade down - it would surely have been twice that length originally.
After her grandmother’s death Mrs C claimed the knife as not only a way of remembering her gran, but also to carry on using it in the garden. Over the last 30 odd years however, the handle has deteriorated to the extent that the blade was on the point of falling out.
Over to me then. I’ve stabilised the blade by getting epoxy right into the handle and I’ve also built up layers to replace the big chunk of handle that has disappeared. The weight and wedge of cardboard in the photo are to keep it on just enough of an angle to stop the epoxy just running off the edge before it sets! Final step will be to wrap tape around the handle to make it more comfortable to hold.
A quick sharpen, and then I reckon it’ll be good for another hundred years!
