Kingfisher, at last

This is the shot I have dreamed of getting, one day. It happened quite unexpectedly as I casually checked out the nesting site on my way to get the paper, and there she/he was sitting on a tree branch just above the fast flowing water – it has been raining for much of the last two days. I had my camera with me, I almost decided not to take it, and it looked like the bird was going to be around for more than the typical couple of seconds. I just managed to partly focus the camera and get two shots, very blurry, but with the blue/green and orange standing out, unmistakably.

I spent the rest of the morning researching into the Gaelic names for kingfisher, there are several. My favourite is gris an cruinne, which literally translates as green of the universe . There are also several words for green in Galeic, most common being uaine; gris is for a grey/green which the kingfisher is clearly not. So perhaps the alternative biorra-crùidein is the better option. The others are: iasgair an rìgh m, and, murlach. This research will make up for my lack of duolingo – several dasy now. Must put that right tomorrow.
