Baby Beltie
Today's the day ………………………. to shelter
This Beltie calf was trying to keep out of the rain today, sheltering in a bit of woodland with its mother and possibly its twin.
Belted Galloways are a much-loved and very distinctive breed of cattle, renowned for their ability to adapt to living on the poor upland pastures and windswept moorlands of the region. It is not absolutely certain, precisely how and from where they originated. The most popular belief is that the breed resulted from crossing the ancient Galloway with the Dutch Belted cow, the Lakenvelder, in the 17th and 18th centuries - when trading links between Britain and the Low countries were at their most lucrative. It was established as a separate breed in 1921.
It was a good idea to take shelter today - a day of sunshine and very heavy downpours that seemed to come out of nowhere …………………….
