Today's the day ………………………. to brighten up

There was a 'yellow' warning for rain in this part of the country this morning, which was entirely predictable because I had a hair appointment booked.

And it was pretty miserable - but incredibly, by the middle of the afternoon, the dark clouds blew over enough to let a watery sun shine through for a while.  These are 'haws ' - the fruit of hawthorn, and they never fail to brighten up a dull day.  They are edible raw but are commonly made into jellies, jams, and syrups, used to make wine, or to add flavour to brandy.

In the language of flowers as adopted in Victorian times, the hawthorn represented - hope ………………..
