Eve's Fair Isle Chairs

Gales blowing all day, along with rain, heavy at times, same this evening.  Saying that, we were apparently the warmest in Scotland, with Unst being top.

I've been working on the museum desk all day, and a fairly busy day with the poor weather.  Hopefully get out walkies with Sammy, if the rain eases.  Off to work in the pub later.

Friend Eve Eunson has been in the museum with her handcrafted Fair Isle chairs.  Eve is originally from Fair Isle, and was inspired to research the chairs in 2018, after travelling around New Zealand.  She has located 91 chairs over 60 years old, with three main styles, standard chair, arm chair and strawbacked chair.  With no previous experience in woodwork, she has self taught herself to make the three chairs, and basket weaving too (as pictured).  She has also been researching the patterns too.  Even though she is ages with me, she has retired from paid work, and gone into this as a new career, and great way to keep traditional skills going.  Eve was meant to have an exhibition in the museum in July, Covid-19 stopped that, but hopefully will have the exhibition next month.  Eve with her stunning chairs, in the Museum boat shed, Hay's Dock, Lerwick.
