USNS Medgar Evans
American naval dry cargo ship named in 2009 after the civil rights activist and WW2 veteran Medgar Wiley Evers who was assassinated in Jackson Mississippi in 1963 aged just 37.
He was working to overturn segregation at the University of Mississippi end segregation of public facilities and to enforce voting rights for African Americans. His assassin was a member of the "White Citizens Council".
His widow Myrlie became a noted activist and in 1969 Medgar's brother Charles was the first African American to be elected as mayor of a city in Mississippi winning office in Fayette
