Ghost Town

Just had to go somewhere different today to avoid going totally stir crazy. As the sun came out after lunch, we thought we’d go a few miles up the road to the shores of Windermere. My initial choice of Morecambe was vetoed as there were reports of some sort of protest taking place there this afternoon.
Even in November, if you have a dry Saturday or Sunday there are usually hordes of people around in Bowness - especially in the run up to Christmas. But today it really was like a ghost town. Hardly any places open for takeaway, no boats operating and very few people around.
Still, it was very pleasant having a stroll in the fresh air and it was nice to be able to see the views without having to dodge all the tourists. Surprisingly, there were a few of the latter in evidence and I can only surmise they’d travelled a lot further than us to get there as none of the hotels are open. Not exactly acting in the spirit of the current restrictions, but a lot better than all those idiots holding the “anti lockdown” protest just down the road in Morecambe.
We can only hope that those businesses who rely on the tourist trade managed to make enough in the limited time they had this summer, to allow them to scrape through winter. And that the tourists will be able to return in force next year to give the local economy the boost it desperately needs.
