More History

This blue plaque is located on Discovery Quay, reclaimed land and site of the Maritime Museum and Events Square.

“During WWII Falmouth Docks, as you would expect were very busy. The Navy took over Falmouth as is the practise with the Navy when they establish a naval base and they gave Falmouth a naval name, HMS Forte. There were four bases, Forte 1, Forte 2, Forte 3, and Forte 4 it sounded as if they had an awful lot of them. They were all ordinary places; Membley Hall Hotel on the seafront was Fort 1, Fort 2 was the Imperial Hotel down by the Docks, Fort 3 was what is now Trago Mills and Fort 4 was The Coastlines.”

Adjacent to it and virtually unnoticed is a small memorial to the Merchant Navy and at the entrance to the Watersports Slipway lies another memorial to the RAF Flying Boats.
All these memorials form part of the towns history.
