USS WISCONSIN

Foredeck main guns (16" 50s) of the USS Wisconsin, one of the last battleships from WWII. Also used in the Gulf War. Decommissioned and retired now it lives in Norfolk, Virginia.

EXTRAS:

1) This shows one of the projectiles used in the 16" guns. It weighs more than a VW Beetle.....1930 Lbs. (875 kg). It can be shot 24 miles and, with radar control, hit within 100 feet of its target. My brother-in-law worked the radar for these guns. I said he should be capable of getting closer than 100 feet. He replied..."with a ton of TNT, 100 feet is close enough."

2) Here you can see the front of the ship in her mooring state along with the 6 16" guns. There are three more of them aft.

3) Side view of the super structure. During WWII, she was home to 173 Officers and 2738 enlisted sailors.  YES...the decks are teak wood.
