No 7

When we first moved to Cambridge we had the wonderful opportunity to live at No7 in 1981.  Our landlords Mr and Mrs Percival worked in music publishing and had a Barbican flat. They wanted tenants to occupy the ground floor when they had frequent visits to Indonesia.  We had 4 lovely years there. The bay window was our living room. We discovered the floor had a camber all the way round when we found a pencil kept rolling off the table.  Houses further to the right had to have serious foundation underpinning carried out. In fact the school behind (which I worked in a few years ago) has a sloping classroom floor.  A low wall separated the street from Jesus Green in the foreground on which we used to sit with our coffee.  The wall had marks where railings were once embedded.  Sadly,  in recent times the wall was totally removed and full railings installed.  OH was PhD-ing and there were many post-grad friends nearby.  We were conveniently close to town, cinema and theatre. It was the perfect place to become acquainted with the city.  Going to parties or dinners in the city and colleges meant we only had a short walk back home.  It was a lot of fun and we were in our 20s then. Next year I'll have been in this city 40 years. Tempus fugit.
