Wound up in Wexford

Cottages

We went for a walk today.  Well, I call it a walk, but what with wading through deep puddles (up to the ankles), and fighting the wind, it really felt more like a trudge.  There was quite nice sunshine some of the time - but even that felt more unpleasant than good as we spent more time than seemed reasonable walking towards the low lying sun.

I like these cottages - given that they are well out of the village, I assume they were built as farmworkers cottages, but they seem unusually spacious.  The nature of the brickwork suggests they are Victorian, when they would probably have been built with only an outside privy - probably shared!  And why have they each got a bricked up window?  The outer ends could be extensions - if so, it's been very symmetrically and sympathetically done, with matching brickwork.  Some of the chimneys are now blocked off, and there appear to be extensions out the back.

They have, of course, got quite large gardens, but neither cottage appears to have a veg garden currently - that would have been unthinkable when they were built.

The name of the road they are on - Abbot's Lane - would suggest that the land belonged to a monastery many years ago.

I back blipped my dinner for yesterday.  And to answer Schorschi and anyone else who may be wondering, from two days ago, the bridesmaid was my sister, who is on blip as ArcLight.  It was she who introduced me to Blip some years ago.
