"The Birth Of The Rhubarb Leaf"...

...Rhubarb - it's actually a VEGETABLE - and has large green leaves, this little leaf on the stalk of the rhubarb, from our garden, is how the leaves begin...

It grows best in a separate garden bed, where it can be left undisturbed for 3 or 4 years. Rhubarb is adapted to all climate zones and a variety of soils, but needs good drainage, regular watering and generous feeding...it does well in the shade..

...It's always been a favorite in our gardens, we have to be careful not to eat the leaves, as cases of rhubarb poisoning have been reported, and so, the leaves are cut from the stalks, and the stalks cut into pieces, stewed to make pies, or just to eat as a pleasant dish for breakfast, or dessert. Nice with cornflakes on top...

It cooks very quickly, and I always add a packet of rasberry or strawberry jelly, whilst still hot, plus some more sugar if needed, and it changes the flavor dramatically.
It has a high content of iron, similar to silver beet, and to do the right thing - we shouldn't eat both on the same day..
(Well this is what I've always been told by the oldies..)
