Southerness Lighthouse

Today's the day ………………………. for a chance encounter

We headed off to explore the Colvend Coastline of the Solway Firth today, between Dalbeattie and Dumfries.

This is Southerness lighthouse - the second oldest lighthouse in Scotland. It was commissioned in 1748 by the Town Council of Dumfries, to assist in the safe passage through the Solway Firth of ships heading to the Nith Estuary. At that time roads in South West Scotland were quite sparse so most of the trade, even between local villages, was carried out by sea. Dumfries was a major port and there were regular connections with Liverpool and, especially, Ireland.

And while we were on Powillimount Beach - further west from Southerness heading towards Dumfries - amazingly (!) we came across Rob, Anna, Tessa, Josie and the dogs who were also out having a walk.  There was plenty of room for everyone - and a bracing wind to keep us all on the move.

I can't tell you how wonderful it was to see them all ……………….!
