Revolution

Finally able to escape the house today - hurrah! Having got up disgustingly late, we went out for a walk almost straight away, in order not to be too late back for lunch. A few spatters of rain, but nothing too bad as we wended our way into town. The canal path was closed at one point, due to tree pruning, so we had a lengthy detour through the town cemetery. Not having been born in Kendal, we have no family up here so have never really visited the cemetery before. It is beautifully kept and a credit to those who take care of it.
Eventually getting back on track, we stopped for a coffee at Caffè Nero. Usually this is a treat for Sunday walks, but there was a double points offer which expired today, so seemed a shame not to take advantage of it.
Took another - planned - detour on the way home, via the site of the original Kendal Castle. Standing on top of the old motte is this obelisk which was erected in 1788 to commemorate the centenary of the “Glorious Revolution” of 1688 which deposed the catholic King James II and replaced him with the protestant William of Orange (William III)
This change did eventually result in a lot more religious freedom for the “dissenters” like Quakers, Methodists, Catholics, etc., all of whom had (and still have) strong followings in Kendal. And thus funds were raised by public subscription to erect this monument which is inscribed “Sacred to Liberty”, i.e. the liberty to follow whatever religion you chose.
Not only was it a decent walk but we had a history lesson as well!
