Silly Saturday
In memory of Admirer, I thought I'd blip a silly chipmunk today. The only chipmunk out and about right now is little Stumpy (so named for his half-tail - the other half probably stolen by a rival). He obviously has a good memory from last year as he runs up to me when I am on the patio, looking at me with pleading eyes until I produce peanuts. He's also been cleaning up seeds from all the flower pots and the garden. Which is fine as they are mostly all spilled sunflower seeds. I didn't notice that I'd gotten his little teeth in the shot until I had it up on my computer screen - cute!
We had a really great time last night with our friends - it was so nice to be able to hang out without masks, to hug, just to be together. Already looking forward to the next time.
The weather is gorgeous today so I spent some time battling some of the invasive vines that are always trying to take over the garden. I had my snippers and a bottle of stuff I usually never use (Round Up) which I carefully applied to the cut ends of the noxious plants. Hopefully this will be sufficient to kill them. It's impossible to dig most of them because their root systems are immense, so we'll see if this works. There is still more to do so I will continue to work on it this week as weather permits. I want to get this area clear before the leaves start making the job much harder - right now they mostly just have buds.
I also cut back my third buddleia and two patches of Montauk daisies - both like to bloom on new growth. The rest of the garden pretty much stays as is - a fair amount of leaves on the ground as well as dried stalks from last year's growth. It all breaks down and makes the soil richer and since the plants are almost all natives, this is the way they grow in the wild. As I poked around in the leaf litter, I was delighted to see lots of new growth pushing its way through - mint, bee balm, columbine, rudbeckia and more. I love spring.
So, all is good in my corner of the world. I'm letting nature sooth my nerves and just enjoying being out in the sun with birds and creatures to keep me company.
Stay safe - be kind - and if you'd like to switch out something else for chocolate, that's okay.
