Aspiring
My focus on churches and Hippolyte Blanc continues.
The blip is of the spire of our church. The original church - Mayfield Free Church - was opened in 1879. It was Hippolyte Blanc’s second commission. He went on to design many other churches including what is now the Churchill Theatre in Morningside.
The spire was added in 1895. The building work in the area at the time must have been significant: our house and the streets around were built in the 1890s too.
Our church manager sent me a photo of the church pre-spire. It’s interesting looking at the various commissions undertaken by the architect, some of which were just for spires. They fairly alter the skyline of Edinburgh.
As an extra a different view of the spire from yesterday.
