Day 1 post op
I didn’t sleep much overnight as I was on regular observations, needed help to use the commode.
I was seen on the ward round and my PCA and oxygen therapy taken down and I was changed to paracetamol with oromorph for breakthrough pain relief.
My consultant visited me and explained that a large amount of herniated disc was removed along with more bone to create more space for my sciatic nerve. He was pleased with how it had gone.
I was also seen by a physiotherapist who took me for a walk along the corridor. I felt good on my feet. Later she came back with another physio to check I could safely manage stairs.
Hospital food is renowned for being horrible and it was. I don’t understand why more is not spent on decent nutrition , as it’s just as important as the other therapies given.
My pain got worse over the day and I needed oromorph more often. I got upset about the constant pain and feeling of isolation. My anaesthetist came to review my pain meds and made some adjustments. I was v grateful.
The photo is of the crocheted doll at the reception desk. It’s of Lyndsey who is on maternity leave.
At bedtime one the health care assistants ,Marie , brought me a mug of tea with some snacks. She was new in the job , a really kind person. She originally came from Hong Kong but has been settled in the UK for a long time. I won’t forget her kindness.
