Stupid Starling

A flock of starlings has appeared and taken to feeding on our front lawn lately. We used to see lots years ago but then they disappeared. I love watching them. The adults are expert at locating fat leatherjackets to feed to their squawking young. They have a special probing technique where they push their bill into the ground and then open it to locate larvae. The youngster in my main image has a lot to learn. A dead leaf and a feather won't curb its appetite.

Another dull and wet day. Between the showers I went bug hunting but there was a dearth. All I got after a lengthy search was a drenched bumble bee, a crane fly, a damselfly and a dark bush cricket nymph.
