Mitcham Village Institute
The Mitcham Institute (now Mitcham Village Institute) was built in Princes Road in 1870, just beyond the northern boundary of the original Mitcham Village. It was a joint venture of the Mitcham School Committee and the Mitcham Institute Association.
It was used by the School until 1879, then as the Council Office from 1880 to 1908, and by the library until 1966. The west wing was added to the Mitcham Institute in 1900.
Today the Mitcham Village Institute building is used for a variety of activities and classes including dance, art and craft, functions and meetings, theatre etc.
Better in LARGE.
Minor recent changes to the building have provided a spacious new shared atrium area which is used for exhibitions and small functions such as weddings. The Mitcham Village Institute is also the long-time home of a number of existing community groups and users, such as the Mitcham Village Art and Crafts, now operating under the name of Gallery One.
The institute now marks the entrance to the Mitcham Cultural Village. This is a community centre which blends both the new and historic buildings through clever architectural design to reflect the history of the precinct, while creating a functional sense of place for the community.
I blipped a wood working display from this precinct on 21st October and the Old Mitcham Gaol on 26th November last year.
Thanks for all of the favourites and stars for my wasp yesterday, making it one of my all-time most popular blips.
