Finding My Bearings

Get in!

Football is always the game of choice in the playground but the students definitely had a bit more of a spring in their step than usual today!

It occurred to me that despite my total indifference to the so-called ‘beautiful game’ (apart from during the World Cup, when I am absolutely obsessed - and, of course, yesterday!), there have been quite a few football-related coincidences during my life:

- I was born on the day England won the World Cup (yes, I’m that old!).

- In the late '70s I used to watch Barnet's home matches from my bedroom window.

- In the early 1980s, I used to give a teenaged Vinnie Jones free chips when we worked at the same place, as he couldn't afford to buy them, and in return he used to mow our lawn. Around the same time, we were given a Watford player’s old phone number and got calls all hours of the day and night from reporters and giggling little girls.

- I now live next to an ex-Crystal Palace player (he eventually got a real job as a civil engineer).

- During the last World Cup I worked at the secondary school Gareth Southgate went to.

- Our godson's grandfather was someone fairly high up at Millwall.

And, you thought my blip was all over but... my mother is German and my grandparents were Ukrainian, but I'll still root for England on Saturday!
