Not Firelight

Two puzzles for you. 

1. The shadows indicate that the sun is rising on the right side of the photo, so what gives the underside of the horizontal tree trunk that warm glow?

2. What's supporting the horizontal tree trunk?

The extra will illustrate the solutions. Sunlight was reflecting off a white log -- the bark had been removed somehow.  I suspect lightning caused the fracture in the tree.
