Royal Air Force memorial near Egham
‘ Their name liveth for evermore ‘
This is the inscription as you enter. This splendid memorial which was opened by the Queen in 1953 and is dedicated to over 20,000 men and women from air forces of the British Empire who were lost in air and other operations during World War II. The names recorded have no known grave anywhere in the world. The name of each person is engraved into the stone walls according to country and squadron. I have visited several times before and always find it moving.
Today I popped in en route to Windsor Great Park with a friend who has not been there before.
There are so many names….a few people obviously visit family members and leave cards or flowers or other tokens. We read one Birthday card from a son to a father….inside it said Happy 121st Birthday! So the father would have been 121 this year…he disappeared in 1944. The handwriting was very shaky so we think the son who wrote the card was probably over 90. Very touching.
