Joseph Sturge
Back to the history lessons. Not a name that was on the tip of my tongue before this challenge I have to say even though I must have walked past this statue at Five Ways hundreds of times. Joseph had a long association with Birmingham where he became an alderman (don't know) in 1825. Amongst other things he was instrumental in the abolition of slavery. That's a big over simplification though - it's worth a look on Wiki. The statue was erected here or hereabouts (it's been moved twice) shortly after his death in 1859. In the background is the Marriott hotel, Birmingham's failed attempt at creating a five star hotel. Finally, I've left this shot uncropped so you can see how badly I judged the vertical. Both of these structures must be level but I have clearly failed to create that impression.
