Diary of an Edinburgher

Funeral

Uncle A’s funeral today, and the day dawned bright and sunny. First day for a while that there hasn’t been a morning haar.

My cousins from down south flew up for the day, and ten of Uncle A’s neighbours attended, which was nice. They’re such a nice bunch of folk, mainly because it was a brand new retirement residence, and so everybody arrived at almost the same time. It was quite a sociable place, although, of course, COVID limited interactions drastically over the past two years.

We had a bit of a drama when we arrived in the car park. A VW suddenly reversed out from its parking space right in front of us. At high speed. It kept going, gathering speed, and crashed into a tree on the other side. We thought the driver must have passed out, but no, there was no driver!! Somebody must have forgotten to put the brakes on, so they will have had a nasty surprise when they came back to their car.

After the service a very plentiful afternoon tea of sandwiches, sausage rolls and scones was served at a local golf course, then the cousins came round home to relax until it was time to head out to the airport.

JR did a most splendid spread of goodies - different cheeses (including a creamy burrata with balsamic) figs, warm ciabatta, guacamole, Parma ham, grapes, honeyed cashews etc.

We were lucky that we could sit outside, though it being autumn now, we were not in sunshine this late in the afternoon, but it was warm.

We all have fond memories of Uncle Angus.

I didn’t even notice at first that Archie was in this shot - the only one I took - but there he is, skulking around, looking guilty because he’s eating dirt from the neighbour’s flower pots.
