Walking on needles

The seedheads of I-have-no-idea-which-species-
of-grass were glowing in the afternoon sun (see extra) making the meadow look like a moving shining, gold laquered mass. This butterfly posing on one of the seedheads caught my eye, and as I kneeled down to photograph it, it struck me how each of its legs was posed on a different awn. How does it do that? It cannot bend the head and use sight to guide the legs onto the needle-like structures and it certainly doesn't have eyes on the legs! Probably they just land randomly on the tip or the side of the spikes, bending the legs and adjusting quickly the position of the legs so as to gain balance. Talented guys!
