Here they come.
I heard that the Tour of Britain was scheduled to pass through Penrith. Times were given for Market Square (Town Centre) and Beacon Edge.
I duly marked the Diary.
AND THEN:-
Last night I dove into it a bit deeper and checked the route. They were approaching Penrith from Ullswater direction, via Eamont Bridge.
"Wain Brave" - Leap into car and drive towards Pooley Bridge, spotting for Lay-Bys en route. It wasn't a Lay-By it was an entry to nowhere so I pulled in beside the only other vehicle there. Excellent choice, we could see them approach from about 1/4 to 1/2 a mile away.
1. First sighting of Leaders - within sensible Camera range.
2. Leading bunch whizzing by.
3. The main bunch ("also-rans") {?} heave into sight. I wish I'd had presence of mind to time the gap.
4. Main Bunch - whizzing - as you'd expect.
BONUS - not only a ring-side seat but a goodly chat to A. N. Other than "Mice elf".

I was somewhat tempted to resort to family slang and refer to a "Lig Away" in lieu of a "Lay By".
The rationale?
In Cumberland dialect Lie is "Lig" as in "Ligging abed".
We were not told to put things "away", We were instructed to"Put that by, when you're done with it". Hence ----> "Lig Away".
In a similar way to "Crocmes"
NO Brian, NOT 'give us it', it's 'Give ME it' said Mam.
Ergo CrocUSes became CrocMEs.
"What do you mean Crocmes Brian?"
"Well you told us that we hadn't to say "us" Mam."
Comical aside. We hear of them shaving their legs to reduce air resistance. HOWEVER - It doesn't seem to apply to some chins.
