Moat Brae
Today's the day ....................... for silence
This is the view from Moat Brae in Kirkcudbright - the flat, raised bit of land that looks out over the harbour - and the River Dee as it winds out into the estuary and eventually into the Solway Firth.
The cannons are from the short-lived (1811-1816) Kirkcudbright Shipping Company's sole ship Britannia. After the ship was disarmed, the cannons were kept in the Tolbooth to be wheeled out on special occasions to fire off a gun salute.
In 1915, they were placed on display here - and, as far as I know, have not fired a shot since .................
PS There's probably going to be a bit of silence from this journal for a while - as I'm off tomorrow on a bit of a watery adventure where there more than likely won't be any WiFi. See you in a little while ..............!
