Liz Lochhead was here

...but all her sweeties were gone!
I took my daughter to Scotland Street School Museum in Glasgow today to return a jumper her absent-minded brother had come home wearing following a school trip there a few weeks ago as part of a World War 2 topic.
It's a great place for a mosey of a blustery Sunday.
I reviewed Liz Lochhead's exhibition called Competent at Peever, a few weeks ago for The Herald.
It's well worth a visit and gives a fascinating insight into what made our Makar. A project she did at Glasgow School of Art in 1968 all about her former primary school in Newarthill, Lanarkshire is among the work on display.
Even at the age of 19 you could see Liz's facility for painting a picture with words shining through.
She wasnae bad at drawing and painting either. She told me that after art school she drew in a 'feartie' way, but now she's back to it and enjoying herself.
As well as Liz's old art school project, there are new Lochhead drawings and collages and (naturally enough) poems by Liz and fellow poets on the subject of school life.
There's also a great wee display of school memorabilia from Glasgow Museums' Resource Centre, including an old belt or 'tawse' and a Schonell Spelling book which brought memories flooding back for me.
Best of all there's a handmade book containing Liz's top writing tips. Unmissable advice for any aspiring writer.
Beside it was this empty sweetie tin. I hope that's not a sign!
